COMPLETE the trail mission, DISCOVER the answer to the question, WIN your badge!
The natural environment of the Glen makes it a great place for animals, plants and insects to live. Rangers learn all about the Glen Nevis environment so they can look after it. Surveys help them record what they learn. Your mission is to take the Glen Nevis trek and complete the Discover Explore Ranger survey.
There is a copy of the ‘Discover Explore Ranger Survey’ at the end of your Explorer Pack and you can pick up extra copies from the Visitor Centre. This will tell you what to look out for and how to record what you find out.
Discover what lives in Glen Nevis → Make a wish for the environment → Survey the forest environment →Find Glen Nevis’ oldest gravestone
TASK 1: DISCOVER WHAT LIVES IN GLEN NEVIS
In and around the visitor centre you will see some of the birds, animals, trees and insects that live in Glen Nevis. Follow Stage 1 on the map and see if you can fill in Section 1 of your Ranger Survey.
Don’t worry if you can’t spot everything, especially if it is cold or wet, some creatures may be hiding!
TASK 2: MAKE A WISH FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
Follow stage 2 on your map to the Wishing stone. You must not do this alone, always have an adult with you and keep to the grass beside the road.
The Wishing stone will grant a wish if you hop around it three times.
Why not make your wish about the environment?
TASK 3: SURVEY THE GLEN NEVIS FOREST ENVIRONMENT
Stage 3 of your trek will take you all the way through the Forests of Glen Nevis. The forests are an important part of the Glen Nevis environment. The survey isn’t just about finding living things. It’s also about spotting where living things have been.
Keep your eyes and ears open as you walk and see if you can fill in Section 3 of your Ranger Survey.
TASK 4: FIND GLEN NEVIS' OLDEST GRAVESTONE
The environment of Glen Nevis isn’t just for plants and animals. It is also for people, who have lived here for thousands of years.
At stage 4 of your trek (the end!) you will find the Old Nevis Graveyard.
In this graveyard there is one of the oldest gravestones in the Glen. The name on this stone is McMillan. Can you find this gravestone in the graveyard?
Use the picture on your Ranger Survey to help you.
The Buddy Mission starts in this Graveyard so why not give it a go whilst you are here?
What year was McMillan buried?
Complete this mission, answer this question, win Glen Nevis Ranger badge.
