COMPLETE your trail mission, DISCOVER the answer to the question below, WIN your Foyers Finder badge!
Foyers’ has hidden poems, amazing waterfalls and shy squirrels.
Your mission is to become a Foyers Finder and uncover these secrets hidden in the forests around the Falls of Foyers.
Follow the words of Robert Burns→ Picture the falls → Seek out the squirrels → Spot the squirrel's drey
Start at the memorial stone opposite the Waterfall Cafe. Use the Foyers Finder Map at the back of your Explorer Pack to find your way and show what you discover.
Warning: the path to the falls is very steep and not suitable for wheelchairs or buggys. Do not go on your own
TASK 1: FOLLOW THE WORDS OF ROBERT BURNS
Follow the steep path down for your first view of the Falls of Foyers – this is the red path on your Foyers Finder map.
As you walk keep your eyes peeled for the words of Robert Burns, a famous Scottish Poet who visited the falls over 200 hundred years ago! His words are carved on stones along the path.
- Can you match up his words on your Foyers Finder Map? The first is done for you.
TASK 2: PICTURE THE FALLS
Follow the light blue path on your Foyers Finder Map down to the second viewpoint. From here you get a great view of the Falls – watch you don’t get wet!
The Victorians used to take boats down Loch Ness to see the Falls which they would then paint and draw.
- Your task is to make your own picture of the falls today. You can use a camera or if you have time you could draw a picture on the back of your Foyers Finders Map.
TASK 3: SEEK OUT THE SQUIRRELS
Follow the black path on your Foyers Finder Map back up the trail and along the turning towards lower Foyers. You are now in the part of the forest where the red squirrels hide. As you follow the path down into the forest you will find wooden posts telling you facts about the squirrels. The posts have carvings on them.
- How many of the carvings pictured on your Forest Finder Map can you find?
Example carving:
TASK 4: SPOT THE SQUIRRLES DREY
A squirrel’s drey is its nest. In Foyers they have built wooden boxes up in the trees for the squirrels to make their nests (or ‘dreys’) in. Trek back to the top of the hill for a well deserved break along the light green path on your Foyers Finder Map.
- Can you spot the wooden boxes where the squirrel’s nest along the path?
- How many did you spot?
Tip: There are cameras watching the squirrel boxes. You can watch what they film on screens in the local Waterfall Café.
