How to play

There are eight simple steps to play the game.

1. Background

This is an online and offline game where you become an explorer and win super-duper Badges! You will discover hidden, extraordinary, important and historical stories at different locations throughout the UK. You and your friends, family and/or Guardians will uncover 400 million years of natural and human stories through a series of daring missions. Complete the missions successfully and answer questions correctly to WIN Location Badges and The Games Explorer Badge.

2. Join Up

In order to play, you'll need to Join Up. Go to the home page, click on the Join Up button and follow the instructions to Become an Explorer and Create a Profile. You only have to do this once, so when you next come back to the website all you have to do is Log In via the link at the top right of the home page.

Don't forget your user name and password – you'll need it each time you log in!

3. Become an Explorer & Create your Profile.

Once you've joined up you'll be asked to Create an Explorer Profile. This is really fun and allows you to create your own Explorer Name and choose a memorable password. In order to activate your account you'll need to enter your email address if you have one. If you're under 13 you probably won't have an email account. You will need to get permission from a parent or guardian who can enter their email address for you.

Once -your profile is created you'll be sent a confirmation email. You'll need to click on the link to verify your account. You can then personalise your profile with a picture.

Now you are ready to go Discover Explore!

Simply log in each time you want to play. The log in button is at the top right of the home page.

NB: Don't forget to write your Explorer Name and Password down and keep it somewhere safe – you'll need to remember it each time you log in.

4. Explore Fun-tastic Locations

There are various locations your can you discover and explore.

You can choose which location you want to visit in several different ways:

• Go to the Home Page, go to the Choose a Location box and click one of the locations on the drop down menu.
• Go to the Home Page, click on Locations on the Menu bar. This takes you to an interactive map, where you can pick your location.
• Go to the Home Page, click on one of the Location badges and it will take you to your chosen location.

Each Location page has more for you to explore including pictures, Top Survival Tips, Important Info for Grown Ups, the Missions and an Explorer Pack.

Before setting out, download the Explorer Pack for each location. Look out for the download button. The Explorer Pack includes information on the location, a map, top survival tips, info for grown ups and the missions. You can save them to any device that can read a PDF or print them out.

NB: Who are you going to be exploring with - your parents, teacher, friends or guardian? It's really important to decide which Locations you are going to visit with your fellow explorers. Many of the places that you explore will not have access to the internet. The Explorer Pack is your essential guide for you and your fellow explorers.

Remember, this is not a solo adventure – you need your fellow explorers to get you there and help you Discover Explore!

5. Complete Daredevil Missions

• Each location has 4 missions: Trail Mission, The Games Mission, Buddy Mission and On the Road Mission.
• The Trail Mission at each location is a series of tasks, which you must complete in order to discover the answer to a question. Discover the answer, enter it on the website and if it's correct you'll WIN your LOCATION BADGE.
• The Games Mission at each location relates to an Olympic sport like running or canoeing. But don't worry we won't be asking you to do anything too strenuous. You must complete the mission to discover the answer to a question and then go back online to type in your answer. THERE IS A TWIST! This time you'll need to complete THREE Games missions in order to WIN The Games Explorer Badge. You'll need to visit three different locations and complete three different Games Missions to earn The Games Explorer Badge.
• The Buddy Mission is a team mission and must be completed with fellow explorers. As Team Captain, you get to choose who does what to help you complete the mission. At the end, you get to get to REWARD (or shame!) your buddies on the AWARD PAGE in your Explorer Pack. You can award them a bronze, silver or gold rosette or you can shame them with the booby rosette!
• The On the Road Mission is a great one to play on route to your locations. You'll need to keep you eyes and ears peeled at all times to look out for a variety of different things on route. Who can spot the most? You can name them on your AWARD PAGE.

6. Discover the Answer

• At each location there are four missions to complete. Only two of these missions have questions attached to them. The Trail Mission and The Games Mission.
• You have to visit the location and complete the missions in order to discover the answer and WIN YOUR BADGES.
• Make sure you write your answer down on your explorer pack. You will need the answer to unlock your badge online.

NB: Make sure you spell your answer correctly. Numbers should also be spelt out e.g. one, two, three.

7. Win Super-duper badges

• Once you have discovered the answers, write them down.
• Log onto the website.
• Go to the specific Location Page, select the Missions you have completed and fill in your answers. There are no limits to how many times you can guess. Did you get them correct?
• Once you have filled in your answer, follow the simple steps to unlock your badge.
• Don't forget to rate the mission.
• Don't forget you can make a comment about your experience on your Explorer Profile log.
• Finally, don't forget you can display the badges you win on the AWARD PAGE in your Explorer Pack.

8. Next Steps

Read the Survival Guide

It's really important that you read the Survival Guide before you head off on your adventure. This gives you essential information about how to complete the missions as safely as possible. We also provide Top Survival Tips specific to each location on the Location Page and in your Explorer Pack.

Read the Info for Grown Ups page

It's also important for your parent or guardian to read the Info for Grown Ups page. This offers top tips on how to prepare for your exploration and what is available at each location.

Explorer Log

You can keep an Explorer Log to record your experiences. This can be found on your profile page.

Explorer Pack

This is a downloadable pack with all the essential information you need for your adventure.

You can access it from the menu on the Home Page, the Location pages or the Mission pages.

The Explorer Pack includes information on the location, a map, top survival tips, info for grown ups and the missions.

The Explorer Pack includes an Award Page to keep a record of your successes including a space for you to stick your badges and reward, or shame your fellow explorers.

Not all locations have access to WIFI so before setting out we suggest you download the Explorer Pack for each location you choose to visit.

You can also save them to any device that can read a PDF.
